Research Update

The research projects to be conducted at NWRC this year are mostly finalized, which are listed on the following page. New studies will include a Roundup Ready Corn Hybrid trial in addition to the corn and soybean trials conducted by Variety Testing at NWRC. Another study will look at management of western corn rootworm and nitrogen (N) management for corn after corn or soybeans. We will also have a study on the interaction between N rate and population of field corn. Corn planting date and population will be revisited again with the newer hybrids. The rate corn and soybeans accumulate yield will be quantified by collecting and measuring the grain fill each week. The data will then be compared to environmental conditions of that week to look for relationships that can be used to predict yields. A rather large study will look at the effect of 18 labeled fungicide treatments on 6 soybean varieties. The severity and timing of defoliation of soybeans is a study that is related to defoliating diseases such as soybean rust. Additionally, NWRC will be a site for one of the Sentinel Plots for soybean rust. If there are questions regarding any of these studies, please feel free to contact us at NWRC or the researchers listed after each study, whose telephone numbers and e-mail addresses are listed below the studies.

First Corn

The first corn for the planting date study was planted on March 29. This corn emerged on April 10, after 125 growing degree units were accumulated. Emergence looks uniform, evenly spaced and most plants appear to have emerged on the same day.
