DSAC Veterinary Medicine Fact Sheet

• Thirty-nine 1 st and 2 nd year vet students, primarily from urban and suburban backgrounds, have participated in the Summer Internship Program, over the last 5 years.

• Fifteen summer interns have developed and completed a research project during their time at Dixon Springs including:

  • Effect of Size of Farrowing Hut on PWM in Outdoor System
  • Effect of Lutalyse as Synchronization Tool on Subsequent Litter Size
  • Internal Parasite Burdens on Outdoor Nursery Pigs
  • Effect of Iron Injections in Neonatal Outdoor Pigs
  • Comparison of 3 Different Feed Rations on Replacement Heifer Growth Rates
  • The Impact of an Outdoor Grow-Finish Hog Unit on Nearby Pond Water Quality

• Twenty-eight students have signed up for this summer’s 9 slots

• Senior Veterinary Students continue to utilize DSAC to hone their clinical skills

  • Beef rotation has had to be divided into 2 rotations due to the increase in interested students
  • Swine rotations are consistently full

• Supply animals for use in anatomy lab and elective heifer C-section lab

• Collaborating with SIU researcher, Dr. Karen Jones, on C-FAR funded project “Determination of Oral Dosage of Domperidone in Heifers”

• Collaborating with UI researcher, Dr. Dusty Nagy on Hatch funded project “The Role of Colostrum in BLV Infection in Neonatal Calves”
