Twilight Weed Control Tour

The annual Twilight Weed Control Tour will be held on Tuesday, July 10, 2001. The tour, which begins at 5:00 p.m., will provide participants with the opportunity to see the latest developments in new herbicides and herbicide combinations. The event will include comparisons of different herbicides and cultural methods for controlling weeds, as well as genetic developments in weed control with modified corn and soybean crops.

Christy Sprague, weed scientist with U of I Extension, will discuss the general lay out and observations on the different studies. Graduate students, Jeff Bunting, Ryan Hasty, Kurt Maertens, and Larry Steckel are scheduled to discuss their research at the center this year and report some of the results of previous years. There are more than 40 weed control studies being conducted at the Northern Illinois Research Center in 2001.

This will be an excellent opportunity to evaluate and compare herbicides and other control measures for effectiveness, timing, crop tolerance, and proper management practices. The different treatments will be identified and participants will be able to see the results as well as ask questions on what they are seeing. The Afton 4-H Club will have light supper available after the tour.

Anyone interested in weed control is invited to attend this program. Certified Crop Advisor credits have been applied for. In case of rain, the program will be held inside. For further information, call Lyle Paul, (815) 824-2029.

In-depth Workshops

A couple of In-Depth Workshops are planned this summer for the Crops Training Center. The subjects for the workshops are insects on July 26 and Diseases on August 16. Both workshops will run from 8:30 AM until 12:00 PM. The disease workshop will run from 9:30 AM until 12:00 PM. The early registration fee for the insect workshop is $15. Disease fee to be determined. University of Illinois Extension Specialists, Researchers and Educators will discuss the many different aspects of each of the subjects. CCA credits have been applied for each of the workshops. For complete additional details and registration contact Dave Feltes IPM Educator, at 309-792-2500 at the Quad Cities Extension Center.

Northern Illinois Agronomy Research Center Agronomy Field Day

The University of Illinois' Northern Illinois Agronomy Research Center at Shabbona will hold its annual Field Day on Wednesday, August 8, 2001 staring at 4:00 p.m. U of I Extension specialists will provide an array of information that can help producers fine tune their management techniques.

A new nitrogen test has been developed and is being tested around the state this year. The test is being used to predict the need and rate of application of nitrogen for the corn crop. Bob Hoeft from U of I Extension will discuss the progress and the likely outcomes with this test and its implications for nitrogen use in the future.

Other presentations will cover sudden death syndrome in soybeans, soybean aphids, genetic modifications for insect resistance, deep tillage and nitrogen usage, and controlling giant ragweed. Planned speakers from U of I Extension include Dean Malvick, Emerson Nafziger, Christy Sprague, and Kevin Steffey. Many of the other research studies will be available for viewing during or after the official tour of the farm.

Tours will leave every 20 minutes, with the first tour leaving at 4:00 p.m. and the last tour starting at 5:00 p.m. and ending by 6:45p.m. Certified Crop Advisor credits have been applied for. The Indian Creek Troop 39 Boy Scouts will have a light supper available after the tour at the field. For further information, call Lyle Paul, (815) 824-2029.

Soybean Aphid Found

As of June 25, the soybean aphid has been found in Wisconsin, Minnesota and areas of Illinois. The counties that the survey team has found the aphids in include Cook, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and Will. The aphids have also been found in a small field on the South Farm on campus. This is the furthest south that the aphids have been found to date. The complete implications of the appearance of the aphids in the fields is not known at this time. The numbers to this point have been low and many things can happen during the rest of the year to determine if the aphids will be a problem or not.

For those of you that have access to the internet, the weekly Pest Management and Crop Development Bulletin is available at the site: http//www.ag.uiuc.edu/cespubs/pest/. Complete information on crop problems and progress are issued in the bulletin every Wednesday. It is available on the web and is an excellent source of information on what is happening around the state.
