Ad-Aware SE Plus/Professional version 1.06 (UIUC Campus Site License)
Aawsepro.exe - download it from http://webstore.cites.uiuc.edu. Additional documentation is available from http://www.lavasoft.de/. Also available from the usual Crop Sciences locations.
Run it and you will see:
Pretty much all the defaults: Next
Accept the License agreement
Click Next and Next to run through the install sequence ending with:
Most of you know how to use this, if you need a refresher, go to Help. If you want to do a full scan on updating, choose that box as well. Assuming you just choose to update you will see:
The updating will quickly flash by and you will end with a familiar screen:
Note that there are some additional choices on the left: Ad-Watch, Add-ons, and Process-Watch. The major new item is Ad-Watch which will try to block certain behaviors of spyware, mostly just trying to block it.
It is important that you check for updates on a regular basis by clicking the "Check for updates now" button. When you do, you will see:
Click Connect to get the update files. And then afterwards, you can run a full system scan by choosing the "Scan Now" button at the left and then the type of scan followed by next.

A complete scan can take a while depending on the age/speed of the machine and the number of files. Once completed, you get a window that could look like:
What you are concerned with here are Processes as these are using up processor capacity and are currently running. Modules are components of processes that could be running, Registry keys and values are suspect because they indicate hooks into the computer by spyware software while files and folders are the actual culprits associated with various bits of spyware. These have to go! Right click in the window of found items and choose "Select All" followed by next to get rid of them.
In this picture above, the MRU items don't need to be cleared. In fact you can set Ad-Aware to ignore these when you first start a scan by clicking the ignore negligible items list before starting the scan. There are additional options which you can get to by clicking the gear at the top right of the window. My favorite is to check for updates immediately on startup of Ad-Aware.
From the basic Settings window, click Tweak:
You will want to turn off "Block pop-ups aggressively" (AdWatch has an aggressive pop up blocking function - you need to turn this off if you are using things like Eddie Business Object 6.5. but make sure you use something like Google Toolbar to stop popups) and you will want Ad-Watch to start up minimized. Make sure that you click the Proceed button lower right to save your settings.
Ad-Watch is the new feature included in the professional version. You can use this in place of the Tea Timer function of SpyBot if you like but you don't need or want both running. It is a bit less intrusive than Tea Timer and seems to recognize some things as allowed automatically (eg. Some windows updates).
Start Ad-Watch by clicking its icon and you will see:
You will want to set preferences and the handiest one is to set it up as "Load at startup" which you can find by clicking Tools lower right. Note that this window also has the popup blocking feature turned off:
Another new feature is the process watch which shows you what is actually running in memory. The default shows the foreground items - the programs you see running:
But if you click the Limit to visible windows, you will see everything:
Looking through this list, you can get a good idea of what looks right and what doesn't. If in doubt, you can google an item or try a program like XRayPC to see if it has something in its database about the file.
