Financial Aid for Freshmen — Seniors

Many options for financial aid are available to students in Crop Sciences. To be considered for financial aid based on need, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Work-study programs and loans

The University of Illinois participates in the Federal Work-Study (FWS) program. Students who are hired for a FWS-designated job must have been awarded FWS by the Office of Student Financial Aid. Educational loans are also available through the Office of Student Financial Aid.

Scholarships based on need or merit

• Scholarships offered by the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES)
• Scholarships offered by the Department of Crop Sciences

More than 100 scholarships are available through the College of ACES, including the prestigious Jonathan Baldwin Turner Scholarships awarded to freshmen. For information about all College of ACES scholarships, please call the Office of Academic Programs at (217) 333-3380 or write to the office at 104 Mumford Hall, 1301 West Gregory Drive, Urbana, IL, 61801. In addition, at least 15 scholarships are available from the Department of Crop Sciences. Applications are available in the Crop Sciences Teaching Office (in room AE-120 of Turner Hall) and are due in October each year.

Part-time employment

Students often earn money by working during the summers or part time throughout the year. Part-time employment is available for many students in the Department of Crop Sciences, working with faculty and graduate students on research projects.

Internships

Students often work in summer internship programs that are advertised through the department. Internships with a variety of agribusinesses in Illinois and elsewhere allow students to learn how they can use their education in Crop Sciences after graduation. They create future job opportunities, develop valuable skills and sometimes pay money. Students are encouraged to participate in at least one internship during their program.

The College of ACES Student Development and Career Services (SDCS) is located in 115 ACES Library Information and Alumni Center (LIAC). The office contains numerous resource materials for students in the career exploration stage. Undergraduates are urged to visit the SDCS and to check the SDCS web site to become familiar with the resources and career information available. The office coordinates on-campus interviews for students seeking internships and full time positions.

An additional student service is the UIUC Career Center (715 S. Wright, 333-0820). It offers programs and services to assist all UIUC students with career planning and job search strategies. On-campus recruiting, career conferences, job fairs, resume writing, interviewing skills workshops, and job vacancy resources are just a few of the services offered.
